Polish Days: Something new. Saran wrap mani (fail?)

I passed the first exams today, so I thought I could give myself some rest and do some nail art. I also picked up my Bundle Monster stamping plates today, and I was so, so tempted to use them, but I remembered that Polish days were still going on (you can submit your manis 'till it's been 2 days after the day), so they will have to wait...The theme was to try something new, and today I'm posting my very first saran wrap / cling film mani.

Сегодня я сдала первый экзамен в сессии, так что я решила, что можно позволить себе немного отдохнуть и предаться нейл-арту :) Сегодня же я забрала с почты мои диски для стемпинга от Bundle Moster, их хотелось опробовать все сразу, но я помнила, что еще можно запрыгнуть в последний вагон уходящего поезда Polish Days этого месяца (свои маникюры можно добавлять и в следующие 2 дня после непосредственно самого дня), так что дискам придется подождать. Условием было попробовать что-то новое, так что сегодня я показываю свой первый маникюр saran wrap, или сделанный при помощи пищевой пленки, аналогичный показанному в предыдущем посте Михаэлой. 

The technique is the same: you polish your nails with the first color, let it dry completely (I already had nail polish on, so I didn't need to do this step), then paint them with the second color and, doing one nail at a time, take off some nail polish with slots of saran wrap, doing sponging motions. Act quick, because you need your second color still wet, otherwise it'll start removing the base color with itself, and you'll end up with bald spots. 

Техника такая же: сначала красим ногти базовым цветом, даем ему полностью высохнуть (у меня лак был уже нанесен на ногти, так что этот шаг я пропустила), затем сверху красим вторым цветом и начинаем промакивать поверхность маленькими комками пленки. Действуем быстро, потому что вам не надо, чтобы верхний слой лака начал сохнуть, иначе вместе с ним будет сходить и базовый цвет, и будут образовываться проплешины.

I used 2 coats of OPI Berline There Done That and a coat of Skinfood BL005. To be honest, I'm not a fan of the result. I mean, it's ok, but not awesome or something I'm going to hate to take off. It's a trial and error, though, to find the polishes that work well together, to learn HOW to sponge your nail with saran wrap etc. It's fun to do, and I think I'm going to try again sometime. In the end, I have a mani idea that is best executed through this technique, so I don't really have a choice :P

На моих ногтях уже было 2 слоя OPI Berline There Done That, так что я просто нанесла поверх слой Skinfood BL005 и дальше следовала технике. Честно говоря, от результата я не в восторге, то есть ок, но не что-то, что мне будет жалко снимать. Эта техника требует метода проб и ошибок, может потребоваться много экспериментов, чтобы понять, какие лаки хорошо взаимодействуют друг с другом, КАК промакивать верхний слой и так далее. Но это довольно весело и увлекательно, так что я думаю, что это не последняя моя попытка маникюра в данной технике. В конце концов, я уже давно вынашиваю одну идейку, а реализовывается она как раз через эту технику, так что выбора у меня особо нет :P

By the way, I didn't use a top coat on these pictures, because I didn't have much of the daylight hours left, plus I kind of like the finish sans top coat... 

Кстати, на этих фотографиях маникюр представлен без топа, потому что световой день краток, и я боялась не успеть отфотографировать ногти при натуральном освещении. Но мне так даже нравится, и в итоге я так и хожу без топа...

A fashion inspired manicure

Now onto the actual post. I've entered Wacky Laki's contest, the task was to create a fashion-inspired manicure. I scanned spring 2013 trends and picked the seafoam green one (like if you had doubts :D). Namely, I drew inspiration from the skirt the second model from the right is wearing on the picture below.

Теперь к самому посту. Я участвую в конкурсе Wacky Laki, заданием которого было создать маникюр, вдохновленный модой. Я изучила тренды будущей весны и остановилась на (кто бы сомневался :)) цветовом: зеленая мята снова в моде, ура! В частности, я вдохновилась юбкой второй модели справа. 

As you may have guessed, my undie for the nail art is Cult Nails Manipulative, previously reviewed here. I used quite a lot of striping tape and Chanel Particuliere for the brown stripes. I let it all dry and finished off with a coat of INM OTD (had to be really careful with that, because it's prone to smudging your pretty nail art due to its being thin). You can see the result below. I'm quite fond of the color combination and the overall look, although I fear the look is not comlex enough to win (yes, I am ambitious and I don't think there's anything wrong with that :) Ambitions make us grow, to my mind), and I'm more than sure that many mani gurus are taking part, but when I come to think of all the wonderful manis we're about to see, every else thought seems to vanish :)

Как вы наверняка догадались, базовым цветом выступил Cult Nails Manipulative, который я показывала и о котором рассказывала здесь. Я использовала приличное количество striping tape (мамочки, как это перевести-то? Клейкая лента для маникюра? %)) и Chanel Particuliere. Когда все высохло, я покрыла маникюр слоем INM OTD, и здесь надо быть очень осторожной, поскольку, из-за своей жидкости и тонкости, этот топ так и норовит смазать нейл-арт, особенно если он красивый :D Маникюр мне нравится как в целом, так и своим цветовым сочетанием в особенности, хотя я боюсь, что он недостаточно сложен, чтобы победить (да, я достаточно амбициозна, не считаю, что это плохо :) Считаю, что амбиции - тот фактор, который заставляет нас расти и совершенствоваться). Я больше чем уверена, что в этом конкурсе примут участие многие гуру маникюра, и на победу надеюсь лишь мечтой оптимиста, но как подумаю о том, сколько мы увидим красивейших маникюров..ух, аж дух захватывает, и чуть рифмой не заговорила :)

The Lazy 15! Underwater creatures

Today's theme is Underwater Creatures or Water Mythical Creatures. I wasn't too original and chose mermaid as the creature I was going to draw inspiration from. 

Сегодня на моих ногтях твари морские :) А точнее, я опять проявила верх оригинальности и выбрала русалку как источник вдохновения.

I decided to emulate scales of mermaid's fishtail, and for that I used a recently purchased polish, namely China Glaze Deviantly Daring, and hex glequins I'd purchased at Born Pretty Store. They're pretty cheap, but the quality is great! Anyway, first I applied 2 coats of the China Glaze polish, then drew out the aqua, translucent white and 2 shades of green glequins and, having done a thickish coat of transparent nail polish so that it stayed tacky as I worked my way through the surface of my nails, started applying glitters with a toothpick, one at a time, until I had the whole 2 accent nails covered with them. I sealed it up with a coat of INM OTD - a mistake, if you're using a thin top coat, like the INM one, you'll need at least two! I'd thought I could get away with one, and about one third of glequins didn't make it through the day, so I had to reapply them in the evening. Also, make sure the transparent nail polish you choose is not fast-drying, otherwise you'll have to do several coats of it, and we don't really want extra layers of polish here if we can do less.

Я решила сымитировать чешую рыбьего хвоста русалки на ногтях. Для этого я использовала недавно приобретенный мною China Glaze Deviantly Daring и глиттер-шестиугольники четырех цветов из Born Pretty Store. По соотношению цена-качество это что-то невероятное! Особенно после драконовских московских цен даже в профессиональных магазинах..Итак, я нанесла 2 слоя China Glaze, после чего покрыла ногти слоем прозрачного лака, который послужил мне "клеем" для глиттера. Важно использовать не быстросохнущий прозрачный лак, иначе придется его наслаивать, а пироги нам в этом маникюре точно не нужны, так как впереди предстоит толстый слой топа, а то и не один. Глиттер я наносила зубочисткой, кончик которой тоже был в прозрачном лаке, вручную, одну за одной. Очень медитативное занятие, должна сказать :) После того, как оба акцентных ногтя были покрыты глиттером, я нанесла слой топа INM OTD - и допустила ошибку. Если вы, как я, используете такой неплотный топ, который высыхает в тонкую пленку, будьте готовы, что слоев будет 2, а то и 3! Я думала, что и с одним глиттер никуда не денется с ногтей, и оказалась неправа. При том, что гвозди я не заколачивала, а всего лишь отсидела 4 пары в университете и потом с подружкой в кино сходила, по возвращении домой обнаружила, что где-то треть блестяшек отсутствует. Пришлось замещать другими и снова покрывать конструкцию топом, на сей раз уже в 2 слоя. 

So, what do you think? Did I manage to emulate scales? This manicure is, for real, one of those that are better to be seen at a distance, but I think it looks quite nice up close, too! :) I've never expected myself to like such amount of glitter, but I guess general nail polish obsession and reading lots of great polish blog changes your perception of things!

Итак, что скажете? Получилось у меня имитация чешуи? Это, конечно, один из тех маникюров, которые лучше смотрятся издалека, и задумка тогда лучше угадывается, но мне кажется, что и вблизи он весьма хорош :) Честно говоря, никогда от себя не ожидала, что мне так понравится и будет так комфортно с подобным праздником на ногтях, но я весь день им любовалась и нисколько не устала! Вот насколько лакоманьячество и чтение красивых лакоблогов меняет восприятие вещей. 

PS only 5 nail arts left! This challenge is so fun, still I can't help thinking "soon I'll be able to wear plain nail polish again!" It's not that I'm not enjoying the challenge, it's quite on the contrary, but I've just got so many pretty untrieds, and I feel really guilty for neglecting them! :D

PS осталось всего 5 нейл артов! Очень интересный и развивающий флэшмоб, но я все равно не могу удержаться от мысли "скоро я опять смогу носить просто лак!". Не то чтобы мне не нравился челендж, напротив, но у меня столько лаков, которые я еще ни разу не надевала, и мне перед ними очень стыдно! :D

The Lazy 15! Galaxy Nails

Today I'm doing Galaxy Nails. Geez, galaxies look easier to execute than they actually are! Or, maybe, that's because I had to file my nails down again, and I have NO length for them to blossom out. Anyway, I don't think they actually look like galaxies, more like unicorn puke :D Pretty, but not quite representing the theme.

Сегодня у нас по программе галактики. Честно говоря, я думала, что такого эффекта проще добиться, но у меня получилось просто что-то красиво блестящее)) Может, это связано с тем, что мне опять пришлось спилить ногти, так что длины нет вообще, и "галактикам" негде развернуться.

OPI Mermaid's Tears and Nubar Black Polka Dot swatches & review

I've figured out the reason why my photos were washed out! Yay normal colors!

OPI Mermaid's Tears arrived with my nail mail and i couldn't resist to paint my nails with this beautiful turquoise color (i'm a sucker for it, as you might have noticed! If only the spelling of this word was easier :P).

But i also had a long lemming of mine sitting on my dest, asking for attention, and this was how polka dots invaded my nails :D 

The following pictures feature a base coat, 2 coats of Mermaid's Tears, 1 coat of Black Polka Dot and 1 coat of INM Out The Door under natural lighting. 

OPI Mermaid's Tears: a green-leaning gorgeous turquoise. Application was a dream. 2 easy coats were all that it needed. Actually i think it has a potential to be a one-coater, if you use thick ones! 

Nubar Black Polka Dot: small round glitters and larger hex glitters in a clear base. I love it, but could Nubar make the brush white next time, please? You just don't see how many larger glitters you've got, which in my case ended up being 100500 smaller ones and 1 big one. Yes, it certainly had something in it, but i want more larger glitters! Apart from that, i think Nubar may become my second favorite brand soon (because nothing can beat Zoya! :D). And i love their brush, although i don't like reviewing brushes, since they're an extremely individual thing. 

This manicure lasted whopping 5 days on me! It might not be too long some some of you, but nail polish usually chips in 2 days on me. If i can wear a polish for 3+ days, i consider it long-lasting.

Zoya Robyn swatches & review

Hi everyone :) Today i'm showing you a polish i wore a couple of days ago, and despite minor issues with it, freaking adored it! I'm talking about Zoya Robyn.

Zoya Robyn is a very bright aqua blue cream. It's quite opaque, but i found its folmula to be a bit tricky to worth with. it's very prone to streaking and is not much forgiving. It also dries fast, so at some point it started to remind me of glue with some pigment added to it (or maybe it's just my imagination?). Anyway, although it's definitely a 2-coater (if you're accurate and precise enough), i needed 3 coats to even out any flaws. Major chipping started on the third day of wear, which is good for me but is a common experience with all Zoyas i've tried so far.

I love the color of this so much! I definitely have a thing for blues, aquas, turqs etc., but this one shall always have a special place in my stash and heart. It's vivid, eye-catching and just awesome. It also happens to be the same color as my boyfriend's arm's plaster (i did it on purpose and he loved it :D)

China Glaze For Audrey swatches & review

We all know her. The color is out-of-this-world, while the application..not so much. But we forgive her everything anyway :) She's China Glaze's For Audrey, one of my deepest crushes in the nail polish world, and yes, i'm adressing to her as if she was a real person :D

First time i decided to wear her i went my usual 2-medium-coats way, and it was a failure. It felt and looked so thick as if i had a pie on my nails. I ordered Orly's nail polish thinner, waited for it to arrive, and when it did, first thing i did was add a decent amount of it to my bottle of Audrey. Then i let her be for a week, and a couple of days ago she was pulled out of my stash for a second try. 

She was still thick, but more manageable than last time. I still might add more thinner to her, but i don't know yet, because i think i've worked out a way to take advantage of her thickness - apply one medium coat then cover the bald spots, if any, with more polish. The result is sort of 1,25 coats plus a generous coat of INM Out The Door. It's psychologically hard for me, as i'm used to applying 2 coats, 3 if necessary. A single coat of a polish makes me feel my manicured is sort of unfinished. But i did it, and you can see the result in the pictures.

It's still not perfect. She dried faster than when i applied 2 coats, but you should sit really still for the first 5 minutes or so, because this is when the polish is really thick but not dry, so every inaccurate move can lead to you having to start over, and personally i hate when it happens. Surprisingly, this technique made my nails look ridged, which they're fortunately not, and i buff my nail surface ever so slightly each time i'm going to paint them. I might have applied not enough of Out The Door, though, and it's known to create a similar effect. 

All in all, For Audrey is stubborn as hell, fastidious...but i love her anyway and i won't give her to anyone :D

PS am i the only one whose swatches get washed out when uploaded to Blogger?
